I tried to think holistically about the China / Olympics / Human Rights Violations Situation. It’s bullshit to say that the Olympics aren’t political. That much international cooperation is political, it’s political when the Koreas march under the same flag, it’s political when the us strips black runners of their medals for asserting their equality. It’s political, period.
I feel torn about the response to China (well I felt torn until today). The Olympics have and will to continue to force China to open up and discussion about it’s Human Rights Violations emerge and get air time. That’s a plus. But what about the average Chinese citizen? I obviously have issues with the government rather than the populous, but reading about this ban of French products pushed me over the age. Bad job (some) Chinese people. France and Sarkozy are allowed to protest to any degree they want - stop boycotting the French cause it’s trendy (cause it’s also really stupid). I’m basically unimpressed that this is the cause celebre of some Chines people - right, fuck human rights, France made me mad by calling my government out so let’s boycott that. Bad fucking job.
Are ya’ll gonna boycott South Africa next cause they won’t let you bring more arms to Zimbabwe? Read more here:
