Fifth Wave Feminism
Love / New Job / New Place
…. have mostly been taking up my time. BUT - I’ll be back soon!
I guess it really only matters what you look like EVEN if you just won olympic gold.
out of control amazing
I was sure the US was gonna do this first. Damn - I mean, I’m so speechless right now. Racism, damn. Plus the racism in the article. I just can’t. Wow.
Bodies on the Olympic Stage
I am obsessed, OBSESSED with the Olympics. I love sports. What I’m not in love with is the commentary which has a couple of problematic themes:
1. Racism.
I’ve heard alot of bullshit about certain countries having athletes having certain “natural” talents. These comments are insidious and as the announcers naturalize racial and ethnic traits (not to mention homogenize populations) is a problem. Consider the following comment I heard this morning:
‘the brazilians are so energetic”
I mean are they really? The whole country / nation / culture. Where do these type of comments really come from? Is the announcer thinking about carnival?
2. Sexism
I am trying not vomit as I watch Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh play beach volleyball - a sport in which in reference to them, folks throw around phrases like “best team ever” all the time.
The problem is that I have heard more about their weddings than their athletic capabilities. I mean this is the OLYMPICS - I think the focus should be sports. But because women are only real women, only really important when their wives I guess the announcers had to focus on what’s really important. Good looking out guys…
Also - when a US gynamst fell, why was the analogy the annoucer gave (and I quote) “that’s like ripping your wedding dress right before walking down the aisle” Again, because becoming a wife is the true reflection of women’s worth. Hot mess.
3. Xenophobia, Obviously. I feel like this explains itself.
